This week we will take a look back at the spring sports season for our area high schools plus Grinnell College.  Today is Monday so we will start with our Monday Coaches Corners.

Montezuma

Track and Field:  The Braves and Bravettes won 7 medals at the state track and field meet.  Senior Jordon Bender was a three time winner, finishing in 3rd place in the 200, 4th place in the 100 and anchored the 4×200 relay team to an 8th place finish.  There was some disappointment for Montezuma that the 4×100 relay team did not qualify for the finals.  For the girls, Sophomore Shateah Wetering had a slow start to the season because of injuries but finished 3rd in the 400, anchored the sprint medley relay to a 6th place finish, and was part of the 4×200 relay team that medaled in 5th place.  Sophomore Shelby Conger tied for 5th place in the high jump.  Other performances for Montezuma at state included:  The Girls 4×400 relay team finished 12th; Sophomore Brianna Massengale was 1th in the long jump; and Freshman Elise Boulton was 18th in the 3000.

Golf:  Sophomore Waverly Roorda had the lowest average for the girls (56.57 for 9 holes) while Junior Nolan Havran had the best score for the guys (44.83).  Montezuma finished 8th in the boys SICL tournament but did not have enough members to qualify for the girls team standings.

North Mahaska

Track and Field:  The Warhawks girls shuttle hurdle relay team (Kaylah Yank, Olivia Lobbrecht, Maddie McKay and Jadelyn Williams) were one of 4 teams in the South Iowa Cedar League that made into the finals on Saturday and North Mahaska finished in 7th place.  It was the only medal won by the team at state.  Other performances for North Mahaska included:  Cheyenne Shaw was 14th in the 3000, 22nd in the 1500, and anchored the Distance Medley relay to a 15th place finish; Seth Edmundson made it to the state tournament in the long jump but scratched in his three attempts.

Golf:  Junior Blake Fisher (56.75) was the low scorer for the guys and Sophomore Kassidi Steel (58.60) led the girls.  The boys finished 10th at the SICL tournament; the girls were in 4th place.

Belle Plaine

Track and Field:  It was a little disappointing for the Plainsmen this season.  The bad weather at the beginning of the season affected everybody but the girls team had more cancellations than anybody.  The boys team did dominate at the conference meet, winning in a runaway over the host Lynnville Sully Hawks.  At state, there was only one medal as the Boys Distance Medley relay team (Drew Sayers, Chris Malfese, Garrett Straight and Joe Eichhorn) finished in 8th place.  Other performances at state included:  Sophomore Emma Willett 10th place in the 400 hurdles; Senior Joe Eichhorn was 10th in the 800; Eichhorn and the 4×800 team finished 10th; the Boys Shuttle Hurdle Relay teams finished 10th; the Girls Shuttle Hurdle Relay team placed 12th; Junior Kenzie Mantz was 12th in the High Jump; the Girls 4×400 finished 16th; the Girls 4×800 finished 18th; the Boys 4×100 finished 20th

Golf:  Senior Brandon Van Nevel did not play his best golf at the conference meet but he shot well enough in sectionals with an 87 and made it to the district round but just missed out on going to the state tournament.  The boys finished 9th in the SICL meet.  The girls had limited numbers with only three players led by Sophomore Marie Simmer.
