June 7, 2018  By Chris Varney

Today, we take a look back at the springs for the Hawks, Warriors and Tigers.

Lynnville Sully

Track and Field:  Not one but two state titles for Junior Tyson Vander Linden.  He ran away with the title in the 400 meter hurdles on Friday, winning with a time of 53.07.  Saturday morning, Vander Linden got the baton in the sprint medley relay and came from behind to win another state title, joining with Sage Zylstra, Nate Stock and Corey McCoy to finish with a time of 1:33.83.  It was only the third time all season that the foursome had run together in the sprint medley.  The Hawks would win a total of 8 medals at the blue oval, 6 of them in hurdle races.  Both shuttle hurdle teams would finish in 2nd place (Boys — Carson Dunsbergen, Vander Linden, McCoy, and Gage Vander Leest; Girls — Abbry Gruver, Mariah Vos, Camryn Russell, and Mallory Loftus).  Loftus would finish 4th in the 100 hurdles, Vander Leest was 6th in the 110 hurdles and Gruver was 7th in the 400 hurdles.  The Girls 4×100 relay (Russell, Korinne Jansen, Carson Fisk and Jataya Meyer) would also earn a 7th place medal.

Golf:  Junior Tessa Van Maanen would earn a trip to the state tournament and had an incredible final day.  After shooting a 102 on day one, Van Maanen went from 53rd place to 32nd place shooting a 90 with 8 pars.  Van Maanen would also finish in 5th place in the SICL meet.  On the boys side, Holden Jansen would have the best finish at the conference meet in 36th place.  Both teams would finish in last place at conference.

HLV

Track and Field:  The Warriors would walk away with 4 total medals at state, all by the girls team.  Macie Boots would get three of those medals — finishing 2nd in the 400 hurdles for the second straight year, 5th in 400 and anchored the sprint medley team to a 4th place finish.  Joining Boots on the sprint med was Haley Coats, Emma Cheney and Rachel DeRycke.  Coats would also finish in 8th place in the 100 meters despite an injury.

Golf:  Mitch Thys would be an all-conference selection, finishing in 8th place with an 85.  HLV would finish 3rd place in the team standings.  Alannah Walker would be the girls best finisher at the South Iowa Cedar League meet, finishing in 20th place; the team finished in 6th.

Grinnell High

Track and Field:  The Tigers walked away with 8 total medals from the blue oval this year.  Sienna Durr would win half that total — the senior followed up last year’s state title in the long jump finishing 2nd this year; she was also 6th in 100 hurdles; the shuttle hurdle team was 7th and the 4×400 was 7th.  Sophomore Kylee Neighbors would earn two medals, finishing tied for 4th in the high jump and teamed with Durr, Lexi Hart and Madison Jones for the shuttle hurdle.  On the boys side, Junior Joe Simon had two medals, setting a school record in the 800 meters and finished 4th.  Simon teamed with Brett Gibson, Landon Steffen and Matthew Cunningham to finish in 5th place.  Trent O’Halloran would also earn a 5th place medal in the 3200.

Golf:  After four years of trying, Lucas Scherf can finally relax — he is a state champion.  The Senior concluded his tremendous Tiger golf career by shooting a 72 and 70 to win the state title by 4 strokes at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Ft. Dodge.  Scherf was surrounded by his teammates who qualified for the state meet and finished 6th as a team.  The girls would finish 5th at the state tournament, despite improving their score by 62 strokes from last year when they finished 4th.  Sophomore Bella Amador Lacson shot 83 and 82 to earn state medalist honors in 8th place.  Senior Alisha Ford would earn her third medal, shooting 82 and 84 to finish T 10th.

Tennis:  Macy Harris and Aleah Kastendick qualified for the doubles state tournament, but failed to win a match.  In the consolation round, they took Estherville Lincoln Central to a tiebreaker, one of the few in the tournament before succumbing.  The Tigers would go 5-7 in dual meets — Harris would lead the team in singles going 9-3.  On the boys side, the Tigers finished 4-6 in dual meets.  Nick Jacobson and Alex Farmer would just miss out on qualifying for state, finishing in 3rd place in the district tournament.  Jacobson would lead Grinnell in singles going 5-5.

Soccer:  The boys would finish 10-8 overall; Newton would beat the Tigers in the substate semifinals.  Senior Isaac Comstock would lead GHS in scoring with 11 goals.  Senior Logan Strawser leaves as Grinnell’s all-time leader in saves.
