After two seasons running the football program at North Mahaska High School, Cass Stubbs has taken a job outside the school system and Athletic Director Steve Ehret will go with co-coaches for the upcoming season. Two assistants have been elevated with Chris Sampson to run the defense and Seth Streebin to run the offense.
Sampson is the Head Coach for Softball and has been on the football staff for the last two years. Streebin is the Head Coach for Boys Basketball and has worked as an assistant for football also for two years. Sampson has also worked with Streebin in coaching basketball.
Ehret says he is confident that Sampson and Streebin will work together to run the program. Ehret says a paid assistant still needs to be hired and others have been contacted about being volunteer assistants but he says ideally, the team needs a total of three coaches to run everything. Ehret says he never considered returning to the sidelines but he will be available to both Sampson and Streebin as an adviser. Ehret says that it is not easy to find a full time head coach at the last minute so this was the next best option — he says that the co-coach format will be used for this season and a decision about the future will be made later.
Sampson says that he and Streebin will be able to work together to run the program, especially after working together as assistants last year. Sampson even plans to change the defensive formation this year to accommodate his personnel.
Stubbs leaves North Mahaska after two seasons, leading the Warhawks to a 5-13 record, going 1-8 last year after 4-5 in 2016. Stubbs will become a counselor in the Grinnell school system. Stubbs originally turned the position down but after Grinnell’s next choice fell through, he was offered the job again and then accepted.
