June 29, 2018  By Chris Varney

The NBA free agency will start at 12:01 am on Sunday morning of this weekend and everybody will be waiting to see what team will land LeBron James for the upcoming season.  Today, James opted out of his contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers and is a free agent.  He can sign with any team that he wants.

In 2010, James upset the NBA apple cart and signed with the Miami Heat to create a new super team in the Eastern Conference with Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosch.  The result was two NBA titles and 2 runners up in 4 seasons.  James was pretty much hung in effigy in Cleveland but all was forgiven when he returned to the Cavaliers in 2014 and then led the Cavs to the title two years ago.

Now there is speculation abound how about where LeBron will end up.  Will the Lakers lure him to the Los Angeles?  LeBron might be angling himself for a role in Hollywood in his post playing career and playing in L.A. will set him up for that?  Philadelphia has been a promising team this past year and billboards have been sighted encouraging LeBron to play for the 76ers?  Will Houston get creative and sign LeBron to play with James Harden and Chris Paul to challenge the recent dominance of Golden St.?  Or will LeBron simply stay home in Cleveland?

When Kevin Durant left Oklahoma City for Golden St, he was criticized for making a selfish decision.  But Durant wanted to win a title and winning should be the first priority for any player signing a free agent contract with a new team.  Any player can sign for a lot of money.  Durant could have made any amount of money he wanted but he wanted to win and the Warriors gave him that opportunity.

There is no way anybody can read inside the mind of LeBron James.  However, I would speculate that he will go to the place will give him a chance to win another title.  James will turn 34 years old this December.  He has about 7-9 years left to play — maybe.  The last time a NBA Finals did not have a LeBron James in it was 2010 when Phil Jackson was the coach and he won his last championship.

Wherever LeBron decides to play next year, it will be in a place where he thinks he can win.
