We take a look at our local WaMaC schools today
South Tama
Track and Field: Keith Keahna won a state championship in the high jump; it was the first state title in this event for South Tama in more than 20 years. Keahna cleared 6’7″ in his first attempt at state and nobody else cleared that height. The Junior tried to set a school record at 6’9″ but missed in his three attempts. That will give him something to shoot for next year. Stacey Slaven would finish tied for 4th place at the state tournament in the high jump. The Trojans had just one other entry at state — Sophomore Callie Frakes finished 23rd in the 1500.
Golf: Freshman Brayden Smith was named honorable mention all-conference, shooting an 89 at the WaMaC super meet. The girls would finish in 5th place in Regionals — Junior Madison Rohach would lead the Trojans with a 54.71 9 hole average during the season.
Soccer: Boys went 9-9 this season; Junior Jonathan Castrejon led the team with 9 goals. Girls went 5-15; Senior Sadie Smith led the team with 8 goals.
Tennis: Girls went 5-5 in dual meets — Freshman Hope Werner led team with 5 wins. Boys stats were unavailable.
Benton
Track and Field: What a Saturday for the Benton girls at the state track meet! The Bobcats won 4 state titles in one day. It started with the sprint medley relay team of Gabbi Garman, Elizabeth Masten, Ellie Masten, and Shelby Hulsebus winning with a time of 1:47.31. Hulsebus had to come from behind on the final leg to beat Pella. Then it was the shuttle hurdle team of Laura Maschino, Elizabeth Masten, Mallory Thys and Grace Martensen repeating as state champs, running a 1:04.84. Ellie Masten would then shock everyone, even herself, by upsetting Carly King of Davenport Assumption in the 100 meter finals. Martensen then repeated in the 100 hurdles, setting a new state record in the process at 14.51 seconds. Overall, Benton girls would win 7 total medals — the 4×200 relay team (Martensen, Masten, Hulsebus, and Masten) would get the 6th best all-time mark at 1:40.99 but finished 2nd to Dubuque Wahlert (1:40.93) in a close finish; the 4×100 team (Garman, Masten, Masten, and Martensen) would finish in third place and Hulsebus finished 6th in the 400. The boys would win two medals — the 4×200 team (Blake Osborn, Nick Thompson, Parker Nolan, Riley Nolan) finished 4th and the Distance Medley relay (Parker Nolan, Noah Moore, Osborn and Dylan Spina) finished 8th.
Golf: It was a disappointing finish for the Bobcat boys golf team, missing out on going back to the state tournament. Jacob Heit finished third in the conference meet. Spencer Tuoro was a honorable mention selection at conference. Sophomore Rachel Maschino would lead the girls with a 51.38 9 hole average.
Soccer: The Boys finished 13-7, falling in the substate semifinals. Senior Vance Bartelt led the Bobcats in scoring with 20 goals. The Girls finished 3-12, losing in the first round of the regionals.
Williamsburg
Track and Field: After getting shut out of the medal count last year, the Raiders walked away with some hardware in 2018. The girls won two medals, including a 2nd place finish from the 4×100 relay (Talia McAtee, Maddie Yenter, Madalyn Wardenburg, Gracie Ehret) after they qualified 8th in the prelims. The 4×800 relay team (Megan Rathjen, Ehret, Katilin Wille, Grace Schaefer) finished in 4th place. On the boys side, Gage Hazen Fabor was involved in all three medals won. The Junior finished 7th individually in the 100; anchored the 4×100 to 4th and the 4×200 to 4th. Joining Hazen Fabor on both relays were Mathyan Powell, Jacob Allen and Kaden Wetjen.
Golf: After 8 straight years of going to state, the Raider boys golf missed the cut this year. Dylan Burns was a 2nd team all-conference selection and both Gage Blythe and Ryan Cavett earned honorable mention honors at the WaMaC meet. The girls team, meanwhile, advanced to the 2A state tournament. Williamsburg finished in 5th place; Senior Katie Montross had the best finish individually in 31st place.
Soccer: The Boys made it to the state tournament for the first time in school history. The Girls finished 4-12 on the season.
